Standard 15A Outlet
120V · Most CommonThe everyday outlet for lamps, electronics, fans, and small appliances. Required to be tamper-resistant (TR) in all new residential locations.
GFCI Outlet
Water ProtectionGround-fault circuit interrupter. Required by code anywhere near water. Trips power instantly if it senses current leakage to prevent shock.
AFCI Outlet
Arc Fault ProtectionArc-fault circuit interrupter. Required by code in most living spaces. Detects dangerous arcing in damaged wiring to prevent electrical fires.
USB Outlet
USB-A + USB-CBuilt-in USB-A or USB-C ports alongside standard outlets. Eliminates the need for charging bricks. Available in TR and combo formats.
240V Outlet
High-Voltage ApplianceFor dryers, electric ranges, ovens, welders, and other 240V appliances. Requires a dedicated double-pole breaker and 10 or 8 gauge wiring.

In-Use CoverWeather-resistant outlets with in-use covers. GFCI required by code. Built to withstand rain and snow while a cord is plugged in.

A New Electric Dryer
Needs a dedicated 240V / 30A circuit with NEMA 14-30 outlet. If converting from gas, requires new wire run from panel.
An Electric Range
Needs a dedicated 240V / 50A circuit with NEMA 14-50 outlet. Heavier wire than dryers due to higher load.
A Hot Tub or Spa
Needs a dedicated 240V / 50A or 60A circuit with GFCI breaker, outdoor-rated disconnect within sight of the tub.
A Window or Wall AC
Smaller units run on standard 120V. Larger units may need a dedicated 20A circuit or 240V outlet.
An EV Charger

2-Prong to 3-Prong Outlets
Old ungrounded outlets need either a grounding wire run or GFCI replacement that meets current code for ungrounded systems.

Outlet Installation Questions
How long does an outlet installation take?
Adding an outlet to an existing circuit typically takes 30 to 90 minutes. New 240V circuits and runs through finished walls take longer, usually 2 to 4 hours. Most outlet jobs are completed same-day.
Do I need a permit to install a new outlet?
Replacing an existing outlet doesn't require a permit. Adding new circuits or 240V outlets typically does, depending on your Michigan city. IB Electric pulls all required permits as part of the job. You don't file anything yourself.
Can I have an outlet installed inside a finished wall?
Yes. We fish wire through finished walls with minimal access holes, typically one or two small openings. We patch what we cut, though final paint may need touch-up. Easier installs are between studs and avoid plumbing or HVAC.
What's the difference between GFCI and AFCI?
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against shock by tripping when current leaks to ground (water exposure). Required in kitchens, bathrooms, outdoors, and garages. AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against fire by detecting dangerous arcing in damaged wires. Required in most living areas. Many new installs require both (dual-function AFCI/GFCI).
Why are some outlets so much more expensive than others?
Outlet cost varies based on three things: the type of outlet (240V and GFCI cost more than standard), whether a new circuit is needed (new wire run from panel adds time and material), and where it's installed (finished wall vs unfinished basement, accessibility, run distance).
Will my panel have room for a new circuit?
Maybe. We check during the on-site assessment. Full panels with no open slots may need tandem breakers (where allowed), a sub-panel, or a panel upgrade. If your panel is older or full, see our panel upgrades page for context.
