Planning & Assessment
We walk the project with you or your GC, review the plans, and check whether your current panel and circuits can handle what's being added.
Rough-In & Inspection
After framing, before drywall: we run new wire, mount boxes, terminate at the panel, and pass the rough inspection before walls close.
Trim-Out & Final
Once walls are painted and finished: we install devices, hang fixtures, terminate everything, label the panel, and pass the final inspection.

The biggest difference between new construction and a remodel isn't the work, it's that you're still living in the house. Here's how we minimize the disruption.
Power Stays On
We isolate work to the circuits we're touching, not the whole house. Refrigerator, bedrooms, and at least one bathroom stay live throughout.
Daily Cleanup
Drop cloths down before work starts, debris vacuumed every evening, finished areas protected. Your house isn't a construction site after we leave.
Pets & Kids Safe
Active work zones are sectioned off with plastic and tape. Pets stay in unaffected rooms, kids stay clear of tools and open boxes.
Scheduled Hours
Standard work hours unless the project calls for off-hours. We don't show up early, we don't stay late, and we let you know if we'll be running over.
Minimal Wall Damage
We fish wire through existing walls whenever possible to minimize cuts. When patching is needed, we coordinate with your painter or your GC.
Insured & Bonded
and workers' comp. If something gets damaged, it's covered. Certificates of insurance available for HOAs and condo boards.
Remodel Project Questions
Can you work directly with my general contractor?
Yes. Most of our remodel work comes through GCs and design-build firms. We respond to RFIs same-day, attend coordination meetings, and submit pay applications in whatever format your project uses. We're easy to work with because we don't want to hold up your schedule any more than you do.
Do I need a permit for renovation electrical work?
Almost always, yes. Any new circuits, panel work, or major rewiring requires a permit in every Michigan city. IB Electric pulls the permit, coordinates the inspection, and files the paperwork. Cosmetic device swaps (outlet covers, dimmer switches) don't require permits.
My panel is from the 1980s. Will it support my remodel?
Maybe, but often not. Most pre-1990 panels are 100A or smaller, which doesn't leave room for the new circuits a kitchen or basement remodel adds. We check during the assessment and recommend a panel upgrade if needed. See our panel upgrades page for details.
How long does the electrical work take in a kitchen remodel?
Typical kitchen electrical scope is 3 to 5 working days total, split across rough-in and trim-out. Rough-in (after demo, before drywall) takes 1 to 2 days. Trim-out (after paint) takes 1 to 2 days. We work around the cabinet installer, plumber, and tile contractor to keep the project moving.
Do you handle smart home, low-voltage, and lighting design?
Yes to all three. Smart switches, structured wiring, Cat6 data drops, security pre-wire, AV runs, and recessed lighting plans are all part of our standard renovation scope. We can coordinate with your AV integrator or handle it ourselves.
What happens if you find existing problems behind the walls?
We document it, photograph it, and tell you (or your GC) immediately with a clear scope and cost to address it. Old knob-and-tube, ungrounded circuits, or improper junctions are common in older homes. We don't bury problems behind new drywall.
